“Tunnel Rat” was the unofficial title give to infantrymen and combat engineers with the scary job of clearing and destroying enemy underground tunnels. Only armed with a pistol, knife and flashlight, tunnel rats were feared and respected by Viet Cong as they engaged in dark underground combat. This was not a job for the faint of heart with the constant risk of booby traps, deadly gas and ambushes from the enemy. Anyone that has earned the title of tunnel rat is a highly skilled fighter and warrior.
This Vietnam War challenge coin honors the service members who fought to preserve freedom. This Vietnam War Tunnel Rats coin is inscribed on one side with the tongue and cheek motto of the Latin phrase of “Non Gratus Anus Rodentum” or “not worth a rat’s ass”, and the depiction of a commonly reflected fighting rat.
