Challenge Coin Design Trends For 2020

March 9, 2020

If you’ve been to a few fashion shows over the years, you may have noticed that certain fashion trends were popular one year, only to see a different trend take center stage a few years later. Maybe polka dots were all the rave in a given year, only to be taken over by leopard prints in the following decade.  The same idea occurs in the challenge coin industry.  Certain trends are popular for a while and end up getting replaced by another a few years later.  Curious about what’s been popular in 2020? Let’s take a look!

All About the Shape (or Size): One trend we’ve seen in challenge coin designs is larger sizes.  Yep, challenge coins are getting bigger.  Many new challenge coins carried by Service members measure 2.5” in diameter or even larger. There’s also been a shift away from the traditional round shape to more eye-catching, odd shapes.  Coins these days are being used as bottle openers or business cards. These days it’s about who has coolest or most unusual-looking coin.  Service members even hold competitions with members of other units to determine who has the coolest coin. Today, coins are getting bigger and rocking some cool designs!  Just don’t bet on them fitting well in your pocket!

A League of Their Own: Another popular trend we’ve noticed is numbered limited edition coins that are made in a certain quantity before the edition runs out.  This gives coins a special allure that says, “Hurry up and buy this coin before it runs out!”  By requesting numbered limited edition coins you can increase the value of your coins for as little as an additional 35 cents per coin for the numbering.   These coins are in an elite class, giving buyers a sense of urgency to buy them before the collection runs out! The clock is ticking…

Meet Matt(e) Black: No, we’re not actually talking about some dude named Matt Black (Hey, Matt, if you’re out there!).  We’re talking about a matte black paint fill.  Matte black brings out the metal accents in your coins, whether they are shiny or antiqued metal accents. What’s more? This is not a commonly used option for coins, so you can be sure that your coins will stand out in the crowd if you choose matte black paint fill.
