Built in 1874, The current St Augustine Lighthouse is one of the most popular lighthouses in the United States. The original structure was built in 1824 and was the first lighthouse in Florida. Standing at 165 feet tall, it has saved hundreds of ships from doom as they approached the Florida coastline.
At the top of the lighthouse is benchmark AQ2038; this is a mark that is frequently found by geocachers. But very often missed is benchmark B32 at the base of the lighthouse marked as part of the Intracoastal Waterway.
The front side is artwork of an image of the lighthouse and grounds based on a photograph taken by Aaron Weed. It also has an image of benchmark disc B32. The backside gives the coordinates and PID number of the tower benchmark. It also has a highly detailed 3-D blue print image of the top of the lighthouse. This image shows the lighthouse in a cut-away view showing both the outside and inside construction.
The St Augustine lighthouse is also considered to be haunted as verified by some paranormal investigation organizations.
