Amid World War I, American volunteers from all parts of the nation filled the recently formed flying squadrons. When they met the young American pilot, they failed to identify his American accent and was ordered to be executed. Since the pilot had no proof of identification to show the executor, he took out the leather pouch and showed them the medallion he was carrying in the leather pouch. This medallion was enough to postponed his execution date long enough to get his identity proven. The best part about this story is that, instead of executing him, the American pilot was offered a bottle of wine.
Back at his squadron, it become custom to that all individuals carried their emblem or coin consistently.
